extensor tendon zones

Anatomical regions (I through VIII) used to classify extensor tendon injuries based on location from fingertip to forearm.

Full Definition

The extensor tendon zone system divides the dorsal aspect of the hand and forearm into eight distinct zones for injury classification and treatment planning. Zone I covers the DIP joint area (mallet finger injuries), Zone II the middle phalanx, Zone III the PIP joint (boutonniere injuries), and so forth proximally. Each zone has specific rehabilitation protocols and surgical considerations, making accurate zone identification essential for proper documentation and patient care.

Usage

Usage note: Use Roman numerals (I-VIII) when specifying zones. Do not confuse with flexor tendon zones, which use different numbering.
