intrinsic tightness test

A clinical examination to assess contracture of the interosseous and lumbrical muscles.

Full Definition

The intrinsic tightness test evaluates the length and flexibility of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, particularly the interossei and lumbricals. The test is performed by comparing passive flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint with the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint in extension versus flexion. If PIP flexion is significantly limited when the MCP is extended but improves when the MCP is flexed, this indicates intrinsic muscle tightness. This test is important for planning surgical releases in conditions like Dupuytren's contracture, stroke, or other conditions causing intrinsic muscle contracture.
