jersey finger

Avulsion injury of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon from its insertion on the distal phalanx.

Full Definition

Jersey finger is an avulsion injury involving rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon from its insertion on the distal phalanx. This injury typically occurs when an athlete grabs another player's jersey and the finger is forcibly extended while actively flexing, hence the name. The ring finger is most commonly affected due to its prominent position during gripping. Patients present with inability to flex at the distal interphalangeal joint and may have a palpable tendon retraction. The injury is classified into three types based on the level of tendon retraction, which determines the urgency and type of surgical repair required.

Usage

Usage note: Contrasts with mallet finger, which affects extension rather than flexion
