Proximal interphalangeal joint located between the proximal and middle phalanges of the finger.
Full Definition
The proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is the articulation between the head of the proximal phalanx and the base of the middle phalanx in each finger. This hinge joint allows flexion and extension movements and is crucial for finger function. PIP joint injuries are common and can result in significant disability if not properly treated. The joint is stabilized by collateral ligaments and the volar plate.
