Full Definition

The triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is a critical anatomical structure located on the ulnar aspect of the wrist that consists of the triangular fibrocartilage disc, meniscus homologue, extensor carpi ulnaris sheath, dorsal and volar radioulnar ligaments, and ulnocarpal ligaments. This complex serves multiple functions including stabilizing the distal radioulnar joint, providing a cushion for ulnar-sided carpal bones, and transmitting load from the hand to the forearm. TFCC tears are common causes of ulnar-sided wrist pain and may be traumatic or degenerative in nature. Treatment ranges from conservative management to arthroscopic repair or reconstruction depending on the tear type and patient factors.
