Warthin tumor

Full Definition

Warthin tumor, also known as cystadenolymphoma or papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum, is the second most common benign salivary gland neoplasm after pleomorphic adenoma. These tumors characteristically affect the parotid gland and are strongly associated with smoking history. They typically present as soft, mobile masses and may be bilateral in up to 20% of cases. Warthin tumors have a characteristic appearance on imaging with high uptake on technetium-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy. Malignant transformation is extremely rare.
