Alemtuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets the CD52 antigen present on mature lymphocytes, monocytes, and other immune cells. In hematologic oncology, it is primarily used for treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and as conditioning therapy before stem cell transplantation. The drug causes rapid and profound depletion of circulating lymphocytes, leading to significant immunosuppression that can persist for months to years. Due to its potent immunosuppressive effects, patients require prophylaxis against opportunistic infections, particularly cytomegalovirus, Pneumocystis pneumonia, and herpes viruses.
