Burkitt lymphoma
Pronunciation: BURR-kit
Highly aggressive B-cell lymphoma with characteristic MYC translocation. Requires intensive treatment protocols.
Full Definition
Burkitt lymphoma is an extremely aggressive form of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by rapidly dividing cells and specific genetic abnormalities, most commonly MYC gene translocations. There are three clinical variants: endemic (associated with Epstein-Barr virus in Africa), sporadic (occurring in developed countries), and immunodeficiency-associated forms. The tumor has a very high proliferation rate with a doubling time measured in days, making it a medical emergency requiring immediate intensive chemotherapy. Despite its aggressiveness, Burkitt lymphoma is potentially curable with appropriate intensive treatment protocols, particularly in children and young adults.
