The lowest concentration of an analyte that can be reliably detected by an assay, distinct from functional sensitivity.

Full Definition

Analytical sensitivity, also known as the limit of detection (LOD), represents the lowest concentration of a hormone that can be distinguished from background noise with statistical confidence, typically defined as the mean blank value plus two or three standard deviations. This parameter is crucial in hormone testing where very low concentrations may be clinically significant, such as in pediatric endocrinology or when monitoring suppression therapies. Analytical sensitivity differs from functional sensitivity, which represents the lowest concentration that can be measured with acceptable imprecision (usually ≤20% CV). Understanding this distinction is essential when evaluating assay performance specifications and clinical utility for detecting low-level hormones.
