Aldosterone-to-Renin Ratio

A screening test for primary aldosteronism, the most common cause of secondary hypertension.

Full Definition

The aldosterone-to-renin ratio is calculated by dividing plasma aldosterone concentration by plasma renin activity or direct renin concentration. An elevated ARR (typically >20-30) suggests primary aldosteronism, where aldosterone production is autonomous and renin is suppressed. This condition causes hypertension and hypokalemia. The test requires specific patient preparation including medication washout and dietary considerations, as many factors affect both aldosterone and renin levels.
