Full Definition

The dexamethasone suppression test involves administering synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone to suppress normal cortisol production through negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Normal individuals show significant cortisol suppression, while those with Cushing's syndrome or other disorders of cortisol excess may show inadequate suppression. Variants include low-dose overnight, high-dose, and two-day protocols depending on the clinical indication.
