DHEA-S
Also written as: DHEA-S — Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate
The sulfated form of dehydroepiandrosterone, primarily produced by the adrenal glands.
Full Definition
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is an androgen precursor hormone synthesized mainly in the adrenal cortex. Unlike DHEA, DHEA-S has a longer half-life and more stable serum levels, making it a preferred marker for adrenal androgen production. Elevated levels may indicate adrenal disorders, while low levels can suggest adrenal insufficiency or aging-related decline in adrenal function.
Usage
Usage note: Always include hyphen between DHEA and S; do not use DHEAS without hyphen.
