Sinus Lift

A bone augmentation procedure that elevates the Schneiderian membrane of the maxillary sinus to create space for bone graft material, enabling implant placement in the posterior maxilla.

Full Definition

A sinus lift (also called sinus augmentation or sinus floor elevation) is performed when insufficient vertical bone height exists in the posterior maxilla for safe implant placement. The procedure involves accessing the maxillary sinus, carefully elevating the sinus membrane, and packing bone graft or a bone substitute beneath it. Two primary techniques are documented: the lateral window approach and the transcrestal (osteotome) approach. Editors should hyphenate 'sinus lift' only when used as a compound modifier before a noun (e.g., 'sinus-lift procedure') and should not conflate it with 'sinus augmentation,' which is an acceptable synonym.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate only as a compound modifier ('sinus-lift procedure'); use open form as a noun phrase ('the sinus lift was performed'). 'Sinus augmentation' is fully interchangeable in formal documentation.

In Context

  • "A bilateral sinus lift was performed six months prior to implant placement to achieve adequate bone volume." — Pre-surgical treatment plan
  • "Post-operative instructions following a sinus-lift procedure include avoidance of nose-blowing for two weeks." — Patient information leaflet
