A dental implant surface treatment involving sandblasting with large grit particles followed by acid-etching, producing a micro-rough topography that enhances osseointegration.

Full Definition

SLA (sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched) is one of the most clinically validated implant surface treatments in implant dentistry. The process first blasts the titanium surface with corundum particles to create macro-roughness, then etches it in a hydrochloric or sulphuric acid solution to superimpose micro-roughness. The resulting surface promotes fibrin clot adhesion, osteoblast attachment, and accelerated bone apposition. SLA and its hydrophilic variant (SLActive) are associated with shorter healing protocols. Editors should ensure 'SLA' is not confused with 'selective laser sintering' (also SLA in other manufacturing contexts) and that 'SLActive' is rendered with the correct capital A.

Usage note: Always expand on first use: 'SLA (sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched)'. Do not confuse with 'SLA' as used in rapid prototyping (stereolithography apparatus).
