Tilted Implant

Tilted implants are placed at an oblique angle—commonly 30 to 45 degrees—rather than perpendicularly to the alveolar ridge or occlusal plane. This technique is employed to utilise available bone in regions of atrophy, to engage cortical bone at the piriform rim or anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, and to extend the anteroposterior (A-P) spread of the implant platform in full-arch cases. Angled abutments or computer-designed frameworks are required to restore tilted implants with a parallel prosthetic axis. Editors should distinguish 'tilted implant' from 'angulated abutment', which is a prosthetic component, not a surgical placement strategy.

Usage note: Not synonymous with 'angulated abutment'. A tilted implant describes a surgical placement angle; an angulated abutment is a prosthetic component used to compensate for implant angulation.
