Tissue biotype (also called periodontal phenotype in more recent literature) describes the morphological characteristics of the soft tissue surrounding teeth or implants. A thin biotype is characterised by delicate, translucent tissue prone to recession, while a thick biotype presents as dense, fibrotic tissue more resistant to trauma and recession. Intermediate biotypes share features of both. In implant dentistry, tissue biotype influences surgical planning decisions such as flap design, the need for soft-tissue grafting, and selection of restoration type.
