An embolic protection device is a specialized catheter system used during high-risk percutaneous interventions to capture atherothrombotic debris and prevent distal embolization. These devices include distal occlusion balloons, distal filter systems, and proximal occlusion devices. They are particularly important during saphenous vein graft interventions, carotid stenting, and procedures involving friable or thrombotic lesions where the risk of debris embolization is elevated.
