Full Definition

Hemodynamic support encompasses various mechanical devices used to augment cardiac output and maintain systemic perfusion during complex percutaneous coronary interventions or in cardiogenic shock. Options include intra-aortic balloon pumps, percutaneous ventricular assist devices (Impella), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass. Device selection depends on the degree of support required, vascular access considerations, and duration of anticipated use. Hemodynamic support enables intervention in patients who would otherwise be inoperable due to poor left ventricular function or cardiogenic shock, but requires specialized expertise and careful patient selection.
