The CO2 laser is a surgical tool that uses focused carbon dioxide laser energy for precise tissue cutting, vaporization, and coagulation during laparoscopic procedures. Unlike electrocautery, laser energy can be precisely controlled for depth and thermal spread, making it particularly useful for delicate procedures near vital structures. CO2 lasers are commonly used in gynecologic laparoscopy for treating endometriosis, adhesions, and ovarian pathology. The system requires specialized fiber delivery systems and strict safety protocols including protective eyewear and appropriate ventilation.
