Full Definition

Intraperitoneal onlay mesh is a specialized prosthetic material designed for placement directly on the peritoneal surface during laparoscopic ventral hernia repair. This technique, also known as IPOM, involves positioning a large piece of mesh over the hernia defect with significant overlap, securing it with tacks or sutures to the abdominal wall. The mesh must have an anti-adhesive barrier on its peritoneal surface to prevent bowel adhesions and complications. IPOM provides excellent visualization of the hernia defect, allows for identification of multiple defects, and offers good long-term results, though it carries specific risks related to intraperitoneal foreign body placement.
