A diagnostic procedure using laparoscopy to determine the extent and stage of malignant disease, particularly in abdominal and pelvic cancers. The technique allows direct visualization of peritoneal surfaces, lymph nodes, and organs to identify metastatic disease that may not be apparent on imaging studies. Tissue sampling, washings for cytology, and photodocumentation provide comprehensive staging information while avoiding the morbidity of open exploratory surgery.
