A surgical instrument used to create initial access ports for laparoscopic instruments.

Full Definition

A trocar is a sharp-pointed instrument used to puncture the abdominal wall and establish pneumoperitoneum for laparoscopic surgery. It consists of a sharp obturator within a cannula that remains in place as a working port. Trocars come in various sizes (5mm, 12mm, 15mm) and may be reusable or disposable. Proper trocar placement is critical for safe laparoscopic access and instrument maneuverability.
