Full Definition

Fetal programming, also known as developmental programming, refers to the process by which environmental factors during critical periods of fetal development permanently alter organ structure and function, predisposing to adult diseases. This concept explains how intrauterine conditions such as maternal malnutrition, stress, infection, or metabolic disorders can influence fetal gene expression and cellular development, leading to increased susceptibility to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other conditions later in life. The programming effects are thought to be mediated through epigenetic mechanisms.
