polyhydramnios
Pronunciation: pol-ee-hahy-DRAM-nee-ohs
Excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid during pregnancy, often associated with fetal anomalies or maternal diabetes.
Full Definition
Polyhydramnios refers to an abnormal increase in amniotic fluid volume, typically defined as an amniotic fluid index (AFI) greater than 24 cm or a single deepest vertical pocket exceeding 8 cm. This condition occurs in approximately 1-2% of pregnancies and can be associated with fetal anomalies (particularly gastrointestinal and neurological defects), maternal diabetes, multiple gestations, or idiopathic causes. Polyhydramnios may lead to preterm labor, placental abruption, cord prolapse, and postpartum hemorrhage. Management depends on severity and underlying etiology.
Usage
Usage note: Opposite condition to oligohydramnios; both terms frequently confused in medical editing.
