uterine activity monitoring

Electronic surveillance of uterine contractions through external tocodynamometry or intrauterine pressure monitoring during labor.

Full Definition

Uterine activity monitoring involves continuous electronic surveillance of uterine contractions to assess labor progress and identify abnormal contraction patterns. External monitoring uses tocodynamometry with a pressure transducer placed on the maternal abdomen, while internal monitoring employs an intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) for more accurate measurement of contraction strength and intrauterine pressure. Monitoring helps identify uterine hyperstimulation, inadequate contractions, or signs of uterine rupture, guiding management decisions during labor and delivery.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from fetal heart rate monitoring, though both are components of electronic fetal monitoring.

In Context

  • "An intrauterine pressure catheter was placed for more accurate uterine activity monitoring during labor induction." — Procedural documentation
