uterine artery embolization

Interventional radiology procedure that blocks blood flow to uterine vessels, used to treat abnormal placentation or postpartum hemorrhage.

Full Definition

Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive interventional radiology procedure that involves inserting small particles or coils into the uterine arteries to block blood flow. In maternal-fetal medicine, UAE is primarily used as a fertility-preserving treatment for severe postpartum hemorrhage when conservative measures fail, and as prophylactic therapy in cases of abnormal placentation such as placenta accreta spectrum disorders. The procedure is performed under fluoroscopic guidance through femoral artery access and can be life-saving in controlling massive obstetric hemorrhage while avoiding hysterectomy.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as UAE. Distinguish from prophylactic balloon occlusion procedures.
