BPP
Also written as: BPP — Biophysical profile
Biophysical profile; a comprehensive fetal assessment combining ultrasound evaluation with non-stress testing to evaluate fetal well-being.
Full Definition
The biophysical profile (BPP) is a detailed prenatal assessment tool that evaluates fetal health through five parameters: fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, muscle tone, amniotic fluid volume (AFI), and reactive fetal heart rate pattern via non-stress test. Each component is scored 0 or 2 points, with a maximum total score of 10. Scores of 8-10 indicate normal fetal status, while scores below 6 may indicate fetal compromise requiring intervention. The BPP is typically performed in high-risk pregnancies, cases of suspected fetal growth restriction, or when other monitoring tests yield concerning results. This comprehensive assessment provides more detailed information than NST alone.
Usage
Usage note: Score is always expressed as fraction (e.g., 8/10), not percentage.
