An autoimmune condition affecting 5-10% of postpartum women, characterized by thyroid inflammation that typically presents as a triphasic pattern: initial hyperthyroidism (1-4 months postpartum), followed by hypothyroidism (4-8 months), and eventual recovery. The condition is associated with thyroid peroxidase antibodies and may result in permanent hypothyroidism in 20-30% of cases, requiring lifelong thyroid hormone replacement.
