The natural breaking of the amniotic sac during labor, releasing amniotic fluid; commonly called 'water breaking.'

Full Definition

Spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM) refers to the natural tearing or breaking of the amniotic sac that surrounds the fetus, resulting in the release of amniotic fluid. This physiological event typically occurs during active labor but can happen before labor onset, particularly in term pregnancies. Healthcare providers assess the timing, amount, color, and odor of the fluid to evaluate maternal and fetal well-being. Clear, odorless fluid is normal, while meconium-stained, bloody, or foul-smelling fluid may indicate complications. SROM is distinguished from premature rupture of membranes (PROM) based on gestational age and timing relative to labor onset.
