Full Definition

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a fundamental biological process where epithelial cells lose their characteristic features and acquire mesenchymal properties. In cancer, EMT enables tumor cells to become more invasive, resist apoptosis, and gain stem-cell-like properties that facilitate metastasis. The process involves loss of cell-cell adhesion, increased motility, and resistance to therapy. EMT markers include decreased E-cadherin expression and increased vimentin, Snail, or Twist expression. Understanding EMT pathways has led to targeted therapeutic approaches and biomarker development.
