Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are inflammatory side effects that result from the enhanced immune activation caused by checkpoint inhibitor therapy. These events can affect virtually any organ system but commonly involve the skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, lungs, and endocrine system. irAEs are distinct from conventional chemotherapy toxicities and may occur during treatment or months after therapy completion. Management typically involves immunosuppression with corticosteroids and may require permanent discontinuation of checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Early recognition and appropriate management are crucial as some irAEs can be life-threatening if left untreated.
