Mucositis is a painful inflammatory condition affecting the mucous membranes, most commonly in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. This toxicity can significantly impact quality of life, nutrition, and treatment compliance. Severe mucositis may lead to treatment delays or dose reductions. Management includes pain control, nutritional support, infection prevention, and sometimes growth factors to promote healing. Oral mucositis is particularly common and can predispose patients to serious infections.
