Tumor heterogeneity describes the presence of genetically and phenotypically diverse cancer cell populations within a single tumor (intratumoral heterogeneity) or between different tumor sites in the same patient (intertumoral heterogeneity). This diversity arises through clonal evolution and can include differences in genetic mutations, gene expression patterns, metabolic characteristics, and drug sensitivity. Tumor heterogeneity poses significant challenges for cancer treatment as it can lead to treatment resistance, incomplete responses, and disease recurrence. Understanding and addressing heterogeneity is crucial for developing effective precision medicine approaches.
