Tumor debulking, also known as cytoreductive surgery, involves the surgical removal of the maximum amount of visible tumor tissue when complete resection is not technically feasible or safe. The goal is to reduce tumor burden to improve the effectiveness of adjuvant therapies such as chemotherapy or radiation. Debulking is most commonly performed in ovarian cancer, where optimal debulking (leaving residual disease <1 cm) significantly impacts survival outcomes. The extent of debulking is typically classified as optimal, suboptimal, or exploratory based on the amount of residual disease remaining. Success depends on tumor location, patient performance status, and surgical expertise.
