CO₂ retention

Accumulation of carbon dioxide in body tissues following laparoscopic insufflation, causing post-operative discomfort.

Full Definition

CO₂ retention refers to the temporary accumulation of carbon dioxide gas within body tissues and cavities following laparoscopic procedures where CO₂ insufflation was used to create working space. Unlike air, CO₂ is highly soluble in blood and tissues, making it safer for insufflation, but residual gas can cause characteristic shoulder pain, abdominal distension, and discomfort lasting several days post-operatively. Complete evacuation of CO₂ at the end of surgery and patient positioning can help minimize retention and associated symptoms.
