CO₂ rebreathing

The physiological phenomenon where absorbed carbon dioxide from pneumoperitoneum increases systemic CO₂ levels.

Full Definition

CO₂ rebreathing occurs during laparoscopic surgery when carbon dioxide used for insufflation is absorbed through the peritoneal surface and increases the body's total CO₂ load. This phenomenon requires compensatory increases in minute ventilation to maintain normal end-tidal CO₂ levels and can be particularly challenging in patients with compromised respiratory function. Anesthesiologists must monitor and adjust ventilatory parameters throughout the procedure to prevent hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis.
