Full Definition

Extravasation in minimally invasive surgery refers to the inadvertent escape of irrigating fluids, contrast agents, or other substances from their intended anatomical compartments into surrounding tissues. This complication can occur during hysteroscopic procedures with glycine or saline irrigation, or during laparoscopic procedures when irrigation fluid leaks beyond the operative field. Excessive extravasation may lead to fluid absorption, electrolyte imbalances, or tissue edema requiring monitoring and intervention.
