Full Definition

Mechanical ventilation in neonates involves the use of positive pressure ventilators to support or replace spontaneous breathing through an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy. Ventilation modes include conventional mechanical ventilation with preset rates and pressures, synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV), and pressure support ventilation. Settings are adjusted based on blood gas results, chest X-rays, and clinical assessment to optimize oxygenation while minimizing lung injury.
