PICC line

Pronunciation: pick line

Also written as: PICC — Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter

Peripherally inserted central catheter threaded through a peripheral vein into the central circulation.

Full Definition

A PICC line is a long, flexible catheter inserted through a peripheral vein, typically in the arm or leg, and advanced until the tip reaches the central venous system near the heart. In neonates, PICC lines are commonly used for prolonged intravenous access when peripheral veins are inadequate or when central access is needed for weeks to months. They allow for administration of parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, and other medications while reducing the trauma of repeated venipunctures.

Usage

Usage note: Always include 'line' after PICC. Document catheter size (French), insertion site, and tip position.
