Transcutaneous monitoring involves the continuous, non-invasive measurement of oxygen (TcPO2) and carbon dioxide (TcPCO2) levels through sensors placed on the skin surface. This technology is particularly valuable in neonatal intensive care for monitoring gas exchange without frequent blood sampling. The heated electrodes create local hyperemia to arterialize capillary blood, providing readings that correlate with arterial blood gas values. Regular sensor site rotation is necessary to prevent thermal injury.
