Critical congenital heart disease refers to a group of serious heart defects present at birth that cause significant illness or death if not detected and treated promptly, typically within the first days to months of life. These conditions include hypoplastic left heart syndrome, pulmonary atresia, tetralogy of Fallot, and other complex lesions that result in cyanosis or poor perfusion. CCHD screening uses pulse oximetry to measure oxygen saturation in newborns, as many affected infants may appear normal initially but deteriorate rapidly without surgical intervention.
