intraventricular hemorrhage

Bleeding into the brain's ventricular system, most commonly occurring in very premature infants.

Full Definition

A serious complication affecting very premature infants, characterized by bleeding into the fluid-filled spaces (ventricles) of the brain. IVH occurs most frequently in infants born before 32 weeks gestation due to the fragility of blood vessels in the immature brain. The condition is graded from I to IV based on severity, with Grade I being minimal bleeding and Grade IV involving significant brain tissue damage. IVH can lead to long-term neurological complications including cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and hydrocephalus. Prevention strategies focus on minimizing fluctuations in blood pressure and gentle handling of vulnerable infants.

Usage

Usage note: Grading system (I-IV) should always be specified when documented.
