intrauterine growth restriction

Also written as: IUGR — Intrauterine Growth Restriction

Impaired fetal growth resulting in birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age.

Full Definition

A condition where fetal growth is significantly impaired during pregnancy, resulting in a newborn whose weight falls below the 10th percentile for gestational age. IUGR can be symmetric (affecting all growth parameters) or asymmetric (primarily affecting weight while sparing head growth). Causes include placental insufficiency, maternal hypertension, infection, and genetic factors. The condition increases risks for perinatal complications and long-term developmental issues.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term over 'intrauterine growth retardation'; distinguish from constitutionally small infants.
