DIPG

Also written as: DIPG — Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a rare and aggressive brainstem tumor primarily affecting children.

Full Definition

Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a devastating pediatric brain tumor that arises within the pons of the brainstem. These tumors are characterized by their diffuse growth pattern, making surgical resection impossible due to the critical neurological structures involved. DIPG typically presents in school-age children with rapid onset of cranial nerve deficits, ataxia, and long tract signs. The prognosis remains poor with median survival of 9-12 months despite treatment. Standard therapy includes focal radiation therapy, while surgical biopsy is increasingly performed for molecular characterization and potential targeted therapy enrollment.
