Full Definition

The Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) is a widely used instrument for assessing functional status in cancer patients, ranging from 0 (death) to 100 (normal activity with no complaints). In neuro-oncology, KPS scores are critical for treatment decision-making, clinical trial eligibility, and prognostic assessment. Scores of 70 or above generally indicate good functional status suitable for aggressive treatments, while lower scores may necessitate palliative approaches. The scale evaluates patients' ability to perform normal activities, work capability, and need for assistance with personal care. KPS is often used in conjunction with other assessment tools and is a standard component of neuro-oncology clinical trials and treatment protocols.
