Perfusion Imaging

MRI technique that measures blood flow characteristics in brain tissue to assess tumor vascularity and treatment response.

Full Definition

Perfusion imaging encompasses magnetic resonance techniques that evaluate blood flow dynamics in brain tissue, providing crucial information about tumor vascularity and response to anti-angiogenic treatments. Dynamic susceptibility contrast and dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion methods generate parameters such as cerebral blood volume, cerebral blood flow, and vascular permeability. These metrics help differentiate tumor recurrence from treatment effects, assess tumor grade, and monitor response to therapy. Perfusion abnormalities often precede changes visible on conventional imaging.

Usage

Usage note: Specify the perfusion technique used (DSC, DCE, or ASL) when mentioned in reports.

In Context

  • "Perfusion imaging showed elevated cerebral blood volume consistent with tumor recurrence rather than radiation necrosis." — Radiology report
  • "Response assessment included perfusion imaging to evaluate anti-angiogenic therapy effectiveness." — Clinical trial protocol
