Full Definition
Optic atrophy represents the end-stage result of various pathological processes affecting the optic nerve, characterized by loss of nerve fibers and resultant pallor of the optic disc. The condition may be partial or complete, and can result from numerous causes including ischemia, compression, inflammation, or hereditary conditions. Clinically, it presents with reduced visual acuity, visual field defects, and characteristic pale appearance of the optic nerve head on fundoscopy.

Usage note: Distinguish from optic neuritis, which is an inflammatory condition that may lead to optic atrophy.
