Full Definition
A neurological syndrome resulting from lesions in the dorsal midbrain affecting the pretectal area and posterior commissure. Characterized by paralysis of upward gaze, convergence-retraction nystagmus, and light-near dissociation of the pupils. Often associated with hydrocephalus, pineal tumors, or vascular lesions. Editors should note the distinction from isolated vertical gaze palsies and the specific pupillary findings.
