stereopsis

Three-dimensional depth perception resulting from the brain's processing of slightly different images from each eye (binocular disparity).

Full Definition

Stereopsis is the perception of depth and three-dimensional structure derived from the slight differences (disparities) between the images seen by each eye. This binocular depth cue provides fine stereoscopic discrimination and is mediated by cortical neurons in area V1 and higher visual areas that are sensitive to retinal disparity. Stereopsis can be quantitatively measured using tests such as the TNO, Randot, or Titmus stereo tests, which present targets with calibrated disparities. Loss of stereopsis can result from strabismus, amblyopia, or monocular visual loss, and its presence indicates good binocular function.
