supranuclear palsy

Paralysis of eye movements due to lesions above the cranial nerve nuclei, affecting gaze centers or cortical control.

Full Definition

Supranuclear palsy refers to impairment of eye movements resulting from lesions affecting the neural pathways above the cranial nerve nuclei, including cortical areas, brainstem gaze centers, and connecting pathways. Unlike nuclear or infranuclear palsies, supranuclear disorders typically affect conjugate eye movements while preserving individual muscle function. Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a specific neurodegenerative condition, but supranuclear dysfunction can result from various causes including strokes, tumors, and degenerative diseases.
